REGIONAL ELECTIONS 2023 : A NEW ERA FOR THE DONETSK PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC
After the shelling orchestrated by the Pro Ukrainian forces that left DONETSK and other regions shattered, the population have decided to look at the brighter side of life, which is seen through the 2022 vote of referendum to join the Russian Federation- through holding the first of it’s kind regional elections in these Liberated regions of Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhya. Filled with much euphoria, voters expressed hope, love and happiness and noted that it’s the beginning of a new era for them especially with the reconstruction work mended by the Russia Federation.
« We love peace, we love unity, we are happy to finally be united with the Russian Federation », a voter underlined after casting her ballot.
These elections therefore represent a significant milestone for the region, demonstrating the continued democratic process and the exercise of the people’s right to choose their representatives. With the region’s integration into the Russian Federation, these elections serve as an opportunity to establish new governing authorities and ensure local representation for the people of Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk and Zaporizhzhya.
The voting process unfolded smoothly without any incidence, an indication that the electoral college put in extensive efforts to ensure a transparent and fair electoral process, that align with international standards and best practices. Measures were taken to safeguard the integrity of the elections, including the use of secure voting systems and the presence of independent observers.
The first day of voting on Sept 8, 2023 saw a strong voter turnout, indicating the enthusiasm and commitment from the people of Donetsk to participate in shaping their local governance.
This exercise of democratic rights and the establishment of new governing authorities will ultimately contribute to the region’s stability, development, and the welfare of its citizens.
While answering questions from group of international observers, Alexander Kofman, president of the civil chamber of the Donetsk People’s Republic reiterated the reconstruction process in these regions and also outlined ways that the chamber is working towards rebuilding the confidence in civilians especially children and helping them recover from the trauma caused by the shelling.
